Singer-composer Bappi Lahiri, who popularised disco music in Indian cinema, is no more.
He breathed his last on Tuesday night at a hospital in Mumbai. Bappi Da, 69, who was suffering from health problems, died of OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea). His funeral will be held on Thursday. Known for wearing thick gold chains and glasses, Bappi da composed music for several films in the 70s-80s, which gained a lot of popularity. These films also include on the go, disco dancers and drunkards.
He also composed music in Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Gujarati films. His last Bollywood song was ‘Bhankas’ from the 2020 film Baaghi-3. He had a five-decade long career in the field of music. His disco music became so popular that he was given the title of ‘Disco King’. In 2014, on a BJP ticket, he also contested from the Shrirampur Lok Sabha seat, but lost.
What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea:
At bedtime, the tension of the throat muscles is reduced and the air goes to the lungs. But, if there is obstructive sleep apnea, the throat is completely choked and the flow of air stops. In such a situation, the breath stops for a while. When this happens for 10 seconds or more, the oxygen level in the blood drops.

Credit for starting disco music :
Bappi da is credited with starting the era of disco music in Indian cinema from 1970 to 1990 with songs like Disco Dancer, Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy and Aaj Rapat Jaaye Toh. In the 2000s, he also lent his voice to hit songs like ‘Bombay Nagariya’ from Taxi No. 9211 (2006) and ‘Uh La La’ from ‘The Dirty Picture’ (2011).
Three-year-old music love :
Lahiri was born into a family of musicians in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. His love for music began at the age of three. Kishore Kumar, who sang songs like ‘Pug Ghugru’ and ‘Chalte Chalte’, was his maternal uncle for him. His first Hindi as a musician was ‘Nanha Shikari’. He never looked back after singing and composing music for ‘Ghayal’.
