On the one hand, the new struggles and protests in India were putting a strain on the British forehead, while on the other hand, overseas Indians living abroad committed to breaking the shackles of slavery were also shaking the foundations of British power. It is important to remember his contribution in the context of the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence. This is underlined by Anil Joshi’s article..
We extend our warm greetings to Mahatma Gandhi and other prominent leaders for the freedom struggle. The contribution of these leaders to the freedom struggle in India is important, but it is also important to know here that India’s independence was not only taken from peace and non-violence, but the British knew that overseas Indians were also committed to breaking the shackles of slavery. The participation, contribution, sacrifice and sacrifice of overseas Indians in all the armed struggles for freedom in India is unforgettable.
Spark gets Ghadar ammo :
Let’s first talk about the Ghadar movement. This was the most major armed struggle for India’s independence since 1857. Overseas Indians, especially Punjabi Sikhs, started going to Canada in the early 20th century, but they moved to California in the US in view of the ethnic differences and inequalities there.
There was already a spark in america as Dr. Hardayal. It was waiting for the ammo. He organized these overseas Indians and gave them a purpose – India’s independence. Which he called Ghadar at that time. The Pacific Coast Hindustani Association was formed in the US due to the fire for freedom in the hearts of Indians. It later took the form of a Ghadar party. Sohan Singh Bhakhana was its President and Lala Hardayal was the General Secretary. Along with this party, his headquarters Yugantar Ashram also became famous.
It is headquartered in San Francisco, which I got a chance to visit in 2018. One of the major reasons for its fame was its magazine, which believed in akbar allahabadi’s lines that ‘if the cannon is worthit, take out the newspaper’. Ghadar used to go out in English, Urdu and Hindi. Is there any? You can also imagine that at one time you can imagine gadar. The number of copies that appeared was one million!
Plan for revolt in cantonment :
Kartar Singh Sarabha was one of the editors of Ghadar magazine. He and Vishnu Ganesh Pingle, who belonged to the Ghadar Party, were obsessed with freedom. Because of his institution and magazine popularity, he was convinced that during World War I, when English soldiers were busy saving Britain, they could revolt through Indian soldiers working in the English Army. The scheme was to have 8,000 overseas Indians coming to India. This was not limited to consideration, but Kartar Singh Sarabha along with his colleagues reached Punjab from the US. He also tried to revolt in the cantonments so that his companions, freedom-seekers, could get ammunition.
They could not succeed due to the English administration and the powerful spying system. There were two cases in these cases, which were called lahore conspiracy cases. In the first case, in September 1915, 24 Ghadar Party leaders were sentenced to death and the rest were sentenced to life imprisonment. Similarly, in the second case, on 30th March, 1916, seven members of the party were hanged, 45 were sentenced to life imprisonment and other members were given rigorous imprisonment of four to eight years.
However, many of those who were hanged were later sentenced to black water. Kartar Singh Sarabha was the chief among those who were hanged. The writer, poet, creator, who used to recite the message of freedom through his writings, was hanged because of his passion for the country.
Didn’t get that honor :
This interesting story of overseas Indians remained in the documents to a great extent and the heroes they deserved did not get the respect they deserved. The sparks inherited by revolutionaries like Kartar Singh Sarabha can be understood in such a way that when Bhagat Singh was sacrificed which shook the whole of India, the picture that came out in his purse belonged to Kartar Singh Sarabha. Bhagat Singh’s mother used to say that Bhagat Singh always kept this picture with her. The way Bhagat Singh deliberately hurled a bomb in Parliament and made a strong statement in court in favour of the oppressed is clear that he was imitating Kartar Singh Sarabha.
The Seed of The Second Struggle That Flourished :
The party chose Rasbihari Bose to lead the Ghadar party after coming to India. Rasbihari Bose formed India’s first exiled government abroad. Its President Mahendra Pratap Singh and Barkatullah were the Prime Ministers. Overall, the most prominent attempt to establish Indian independence through the armed revolution in India was through the Ghadar movement. The pioneers of which were overseas Indians. The seed of India’s second struggle for independence from abroad was hidden in this first armed struggle. Rasbihari Bose did not succeed in the second decade of the twentieth century, but he reached Japan and established the Azad Hind Fauj.
They were preparing the basis for the struggle. First, based on the experience and background of the armed conflict, they wanted them to get the active cooperation of Britain’s enemies Japan and Germany for the next battle. Meanwhile, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose went abroad in 1941. When a miraculous personality like Netaji came abroad, the Azad Hind Fauj movement gained the glow that formed the basis of an armed struggle against the British. Subhash Chandra Bose announces azad hind fauj government.
For India’s independence, he came to Singapore, where about 60,000 soldiers, who were then released from Japanese captivity, joined the Azad Hind Fauj. He received cooperation from many countries of the world. His soldiers conquered places like Andaman and Nicobar and Kohima, surprisingthe whole world.
Escaped Foreigners :
After that, he started taking the same ring as freedom. The cycle of world events turned in such a way that Germany and Japan were defeated and with this the edge of the Azad Hind Fauj weakened. But through these two armed revolutions inspired and driven by overseas Indians, the British Government came to know that India is no longer a slave and that this campaign involves not only Indians but also overseas Indians living in different countries of the world actively and dynamically and to do everything to do life for this purpose are ready.
It was a alarm bell for the British Raj, as a result they started migrating from India. India can still draw inspiration from this sacrifice of overseas Indians. We see this attachment and concern about India, Indianness and Indian interests 100 years ago. She has taken a wider shape today. Remembering the distinguished contributions of overseas Indians during this Amrit Mahotsav of Independence, it will be a proper evaluation of the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence.
